Well! This episode was a blast mainly because it was all about challenging critical thinking. We came into it with a simple concept-clean your room.

We'd originally planned to cover a different topic and, once I got a break, I just couldn't bring myself to push everyone to delve into ridiculous amounts of research when the beach was just so close. After MWNN and myself talked a little bit, we decided to just dig for stuff that interested us and ended up with this simple rule from Dr. Jordan B. Peterson.

The episode speaks for itself, I think, but there's a few things we discussed in this one that I wanted to make sure we provide sourcing for.

Obviously, there's two books we end up discussing by Dr. Peterson.

Before we got into that, though, we talked a bit about vehicles. I wasn't sure exactly when the fox body Mustang came out, but I thought it was the early 80's. It was actually earlier than that, with the first Fox Body Mustang debuting in model year 1979:

Now, to Dr. Peterson's work. While he has much more than this, these two volumes were the basis for his podcast. I've listed these out in the order of their publication and how I would recommend reading them. The two forces Dr. Peterson is talking about, order and chaos, both have the dual-capacity to be forces of "good" or "bad" depending on how we choose to interact with them. Since, it appears to me, that the standard order of nature is chaos I'd recommend starting there.

12 Rules for Life: An Antidote To Chaos--This book is excellent. I would proffer a bit of advice. Don't go into this book with any expectations besides that it is wonderful. The rules are consistently communicated, and the logic is elegant. Dr. Peterson is a brilliant thinker, and he shows it by pulling wisdom from places you won't expect. Deuce refers to Dr. Peterson as the "lobster man" because of this book.

Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life--This is the newest book and, I think, it is the yang to the first book's yin . These two pieces, when combined, paint a picture of how Dr. Peterson perceives the balance between order and chaos that we all must create in order to maintain balance and put our lives together. Dr. Peterson opens the book with a very open bit of writing, and he is very transparent through the entire book. Reading it, I felt like I was conversing with him even though I've never met the man.

These two books are incredibly important reading material for anyone interested in taking an active role in building their life, and they are a great way to start an examination of things if you have parts of your life that you're not happy with. We all have them; its a matter of deciding what we're going to do with them, once we recognize the true nature of the problems, while we're putting things together in a way that makes life better instead of worse.

Clearly, we all have our own ways of going about that process. But, just like the Man with No Name's "One Bitch Rule", if you think you can just languish in what makes you unhappy or miserable and expect other people to care over the long term-I think you'll find that's not quite true. We all have to do the best we can, and we have to try and make things better. Even in circumstances where we didn't create our own demons, we reach a point where the responsibility is ours alone.

That's what this episode is about. Making things better. Usually, that road is rough and not very fun. But it sure beats the hell out of the alternative. Happy room cleaning!

I'm a firm believer in the First Amendment.  I also have a severe dislike of keyboard warriors that like posting things just because it makes them feel big.  I don't do a comment section; I want people to have conversations in person and about important things, but not online where the point isn't conversation but seeking an echo chamber.
